What’s Happening Now and What’s Next?
Each station will be underground and include key infrastructure such as platforms, escalators, elevators, clear wayfinding, passenger information, tactile surfaces, and public art. The stations will be designed to handle future passenger growth and incorporate “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” principles, including open, well-lit spaces, security cameras, and emergency phones for maximum safety. Stations will blend with the existing streetscape, featuring street furniture and bike parking. All stations will be accessible by bus, walking, and cycling, creating a complete multi-modal experience.
Once the Millennium Line extension from VCC-Clark to Arbutus Station is complete, these stations will make living, working, shopping, and accessing services along Broadway more accessible and affordable. Station locations were chosen based on technical analysis and input from project partners. Properties next to station entrances will be used as construction work and storage areas to minimize disruption along Broadway and nearby streets, ensuring safer conditions for traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists.
UBC SkyTrain Extension by 2050
With the Broadway Subway SkyTrain Extension to Arbutus, which will be completed in 2027, TransLink is studying a potential connection to UBC.
The proposed Millennium Line UBC Extension would benefit people throughout the region. UBC is a significant destination in Metro Vancouver and one of the largest employment hubs.
In 2019, UBC had a daytime population of about 80,000, including 20,000 employees, over 50,000 students, and 10,000 residents. By 2050, this daytime population is projected to grow to 130,000—students, faculty, and staff commute to UBC from all over the region.
The Mayors’ Council presented and endorsed an initial concept for station locations called the Regional Base Scope. This concept includes stations at Macdonald, Alma, Jericho, and the UBC Trolley Bus Loop (UBC 1a), with passive provisions for future extensions and potential infill stations.
The Millennium Line UBC Extension is a priority project in the Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities plan. The next step is collaborating with senior government and partners to advance the project to the full business case stage.
