Where traditionally a Tea House would be a closed off wooden structure in a garden or temple, Kuma wanted to create a space for stillness in a fast moving city. This unique tea house overlooks both the district and the bay and features steel and glass to frame expansive views over Coal Harbour. In addition Kuma chose to use Douglas Fir in place of imported typical Japanese cedar for the exterior. The house will be surrounded by pebbles and delicate moss, providing a lush contrast to the surrounding buildings. The interior will feature a low ceiling and sliding walls with shoji screens covered in Japanese washi paper.
