1800’s

The original development of Burquitlam can be traced back to the year 1859. The construction of North road began to connect the capital (at the time,) New Westminster to Port Moody’s port facilities. The land was unused by the city of Burnaby and was able to be utilized for easier transportation. This route became essential and was used to improve wagon traffic in 1861.

 

1900’s and After

Burquitlam was actually a piece of land that the City of Burnaby was unable to put to good use. This area now marks the boundaries between Burnaby and Coquitlam. A combination of the two city’s names is how the name Burquitlam was created. Seeing as it is a great combination of the two places, and it is bordered by both, it is the most appropriate name for the space.
